- Push the canes into the ground to form a square (roughly a metre by a metre).
- Wrap the netting around the canes and secure it with wire at the top and bottom.
- Fill the bin loosely with leaves. Don’t compress them – airflow helps the fungi work.
- Water the leaves thoroughly. They should feel like a damp sponge, not dripping wet.
- Leave it. Check periodically and add water if the pile dries out.

Method 2: The Plastic Bag Method

- Fill a large plastic bag about three-quarters full.
- Moisten the leaves with a garden hose – damp, not wet.
- Tie the top of the bag securely.
- Puncture holes in the bottom and sides to allow airflow.
- Stack the bags out of sight and leave them for up to two years.

Shredding: The Secret to Faster Results
Leaves that are shredded break down much faster. The smaller pieces provide more surface area for fungi and bacteria to work on.

For lawns: Top-dress with a light layer (about a quarter-inch) to improve moisture holding and soil structure. Heavier layers can smother grass.
